Bears destroy Devils
RIFLE, Colorado — Rifle's football team closed its season out on a high note — a very high note — with a 57-0 win over visiting Eagle Valley on Friday.The Bears wrapped their first year under head coach Ryan Sulkowski with a 4-6 record, while Eagle Valley fell to 1-9 in defeat. Rifle finished up with a 3-5 record in 3A Western Slope League.
Rams hold off Cedaredge
CARBONDALE, Colorado — Roaring Fork scored a 17-16 win over visiting Cedaredge on Friday to finish up its season on a winning note.Cesar Farrias carried the ball 25 times and racked up 109 yards rushing.
The Rams took a 14-0 lead early, getting a 10-yard touchdown run from Farrias and a 1-yard score from Johnny Nieslanik.
Cedaredge found the end zone just before halftime, recovering a fumble and returning it for a TD to make it 14-6 at the break.
The Bruins tied it up with a TD in the third quarter before a 46-yard, fourth-quarter field goal by Farrias put the Rams back on top.
Roaring Fork took a safety with 5 seconds to go to round out the final score.
The Rams closed out their season with a 3-7 record. Cedaredge finished off its campaign at 2-8.
Skiers rout Titans
ASPEN, Colorado — Nicky Ufkes ran for 234 yards, eclipsing 2,000 rushing yards for the season, as Aspen routed Coal Ridge, 54-0, on Friday.“It's truly a humbling feeling,” a beaming Ufkes said afterward, pausing sporadically to exchange hugs with family and teammates. “At the same time, the offensive line did a great job. This has really been a team effort.”
“[Ufkes has] been a warrior all year for us,” said Aspen coach Mike Sirko, whose team clinched a third-consecutive 2A state playoff berth after last week's win in Gunnison. “Pound for pound, he's the strongest kid out there. … It's sweet to have a guy like him [accomplish this feat]. The kids pull for him, and he pulls for them. He's such a hard worker.”
Ufkes, Sirko and the Skiers improved to 8-2 overall with the win in the regular season finale. Coal Ridge finished up its year at 2-8.
Cards can't get past Olathe
OLATHE, Colorado — Grand Valley's season came to an end with a 56-14 loss at Olathe on Friday. The Cardinals needed a win and Basalt to beat Gunnison to be eligible to make the Class 2A playoffs. Neither happened, as Gunnison edged Basalt, 37-36, to claim third place in the 2A WSL.
Olathe, which hopes to defend its 2008 state title as it embarks on the postseason, improved to 10-0 overall.
The Cardinals ended their season with an 7-3 overall record.
