When you put together the type of season Roaring Fork's volleyball team did, the accolades will follow.
The Rams, fresh off a 22-3 campaign that featured a league title and ended at regionals, hauled in their fair share of All-3A Western Slope League honors.
Carrie Shultz bagged the circuit's Coach of the Year award. Junior Landon Garvik, who provides Roaring Fork quite the presence at the net with her size and powerful arm swing, landed Player of the Year honors.
Juniors Joey Clingan and Niki Burns joined Garvik on the first team. Senior Alli Zeigel and juniors Savanna Phibbs and Ixchel Muņiz were honorable mentions.
“You know, I want to credit the team,” Shultz lauded. “With the success we had this year, it was nice that the team was given credit for that.”
And a wildly successful campaign it was for Shultz's Rams, whose season ended with a loss to Faith Christian in a one-game playoff for a state meet berth at the Nov. 7 Region D Tournament in Bayfield. It was Roaring Fork's first regional appearance since 2004.
Losing just one senior — Zeigel — the Rams appear poised to terrorize the 3A WSL again in 2010.
Until then, Shultz and her squad will happily celebrate their 2009 successes.
“I'm very proud of the success everyone's had,” the second-year coach said. “The improvement of last year to this year, individually and as a team, is very exciting.”
