Post Independent office closed

The business and circulation offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday this week. The classified department will close Thursday and be open for regular hours on Friday.

All delivery requests for the holiday must be made today or Wednesday.

Volunteering

Home tour

PEO Chapter IP will host the eleventh annual Home Tour from 1-4 p.m. Dec. 5. Four homes, located in Mesa Ridge, Battlement Creek Village and the Reserve subdivisions, will present personal collections, artistic decorative touches and special holiday ideas.

Proceeds from this festive event enables Chapter IP to offer scholarships to local senior high school girls and deserving local women who wish to further their education. For tickets and more information call Margaret at 285-1441 or Sherry at 285-1317.

RFHS raffle

The Roaring Fork High School World Travelers Club will be selling Raffle Tickets to win a basket filled with community goods, three baskets will be raffled off. Tickets go on sale Dec. 1. The drawing for the baskets will be held Dec. 18 and winners will be notified.

Upcoming events include the school's Winter Garage Sale Dec. 12 and Gift Wrapping Dec. 19, both at RFHS 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call RFHS for more information, 384-5754.

Energy forum in Rifle

Colorado Mountain College-West Garfield Campus and the Rifle, Grand Junction, Silt and Meeker chambers of commerce are co-sponsoring a presentation at 8 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, titled “A Comprehensive Strategy on Energy Independence” by Denise McCourt, industry relations director with the American Petroleum Institute (API) — the primary trade association representing America's oil and natural gas industry, based in Washington, D.C.

McCourt's presentation discusses strategies to achieve America's energy security through a balanced national energy policy that will create substantial long-term solutions. Her presentation will outline how the United States can secure sufficient quantities of reliable, affordable energy, while safeguarding the environment, to meet the energy needs of American consumers and to create new high-paying jobs and generate trillions of dollars for federal, state and local governments. McCourt will focus on presenting solutions that include a concentration on energy efficiency, diversity of supply and technology.

Benefit concert

Heart of the Rockies, a longtime valley favorite featuring John Sommers and Twirp Anderson, plays a benefit concert on Saturday, Nov. 28, at the Carbondale Community United Methodist Church.

The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., including a luncheon, auction and music by a variety of local musicians, including Heart of the Rockies, starting at 11.

Donations will be taken at the door to assist an individual in the church who is in need of dental care.

The church is located at 385 S. Second St. in Carbondale. Additional parking is available at Bridges High School, one block to the west on Third Street.

CMC Theatre production

Colorado Mountain College Theatre presents “A Walk in the Woods,” featuring Bob Moore and Gary Ketzenbarger, Dec. 3-5 and Dec. 11-13 in the New Space Theatre at Spring Valley.

According to Dramatists Play Service, the story takes place on the outskirts of Geneva, where two superpower arms negotiators, a Russian and an American, meet informally after long, frustrating hours at the bargaining table with the knowledge that the elemental differences in their two governments will continue to exacerbate as long as the real power rests in the hands of those burdened by the bitterness of the past.

Christmas Bazaar of New Castle

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, the second annual Christmas Bazaar of New Castle will be held at the New Castle Senior Community Center, 201 Castle Valley Blvd. Members of the New Castle Senior Housing “Pins and Needles” group will have handcrafted Christmas and other items for sale. Affordable gifts from local seniors.

Holiday Bazaar

Your invited to the Holiday Bazaar at Carbondale Crystal Meadows Senior Housing on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Rominger Room on Hendrick Drive off of Highway 133. There will be a great variety of hand crafted gift items, homemade baked goodies and food items. Presented to you by the seniors of Crystal Meadows any questions call 963-9326. Come and enjoy.

Bariatric surgery support group

Grand River Hospital and Medical Center is now offering a bariatric surgery support group the second Tuesday of every month. The support group is held from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Grand River Hospital and Medical Center in Rifle from 5:30-7 p.m. Those who have had bariatric surgery should consider going to a support group. The surgery is the first step of this style change. Your eating habits, emotions and relationships can also be changed. This support group offers the opportunity to discuss personal or professional issues and learn new skills with others who understand and support the same goals. Participants will learn skills to keep them on track, how to develop realistic goals and expectations and receive education in exercise, cooking, self-care, grocery shopping, clothing advice and plastic surgery. The Dec. 8 group will focus on emotions during the holidays and the Jan. 12 group on moving forward in the new year. Topics vary month to month based on the group's input and wishes. Dorsey memorial fund

A memorial fund for Taylor Dorsey has been set up at local Alpine Bank locations. Dorsey died unexpectedly on Nov. 5 in Denver. He was the son of Mike and Joelle Dorsey of Silt.

Seasonal flu clinic

Garfield County Public Health will host a seasonal flu clinic on Tuesday, Nov. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Downtown Drug on Grand Avenue in Glenwood Springs. This is a walk-in clinic, open to the public, and no appointment is necessary. The H1N1 flu shot will not be given at this clinic. Seasonal flu shots are $20 for adults and $10 for kids.
