GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — Short and fast.

That's Glenwood Springs girls basketball coach Bryan Derby's three-word summation of what his 2009-10 Demons bring to the table.

With his tallest player, senior Sarah Treese, measuring in at 5 feet, 9 inches, Derby's squad will have to lean on its quickness and basketball IQ.

That's not to say Glenwood is taking the court without its share of talented players.

Back for a junior campaign is Kenzie Kuhn, who came of age during last season's 20-4 effort. Derby said she'll handle point-guard duties alongside sophomore Cassidy Gaddis.

Sophomore Lexie Warkentin also showed promise while logging significant minutes as a freshman last winter.

Derby likes the young talent his team boasts. Though they'll have to play small ball, the fourth-year coach thinks his Demons are tooled for success.

“We're going to be short and fast,” Derby said. “We'll have to go wide and try to penetrate. Me and [assistant coach] Trey Holt have spent some time redesigning some of our offenses. Just because they don't have height, we'll be trying to do other things.”

While the Demons lack height, they don't lack a winning tradition. Glenwood's enjoyed three straight 20-win seasons and have won two consecutive 4A Western Slope League titles. Deep playoff runs have also been the norm.

“We're holding these girls to high expectations,” Derby said. “As of right now, they're showing me we can. We'll see when the season starts. … They had a talk the other night. They've all been there at least through the Elite Eight. They know what it takes, and they're holding themselves up to some high standards.”
