The Glenwood Grizzly Midget Minor A club hockey team took the ice this past Saturday afternoon with only six skaters to face the 14 skaters of Mullen Youth Hockey.
The Grizzlies, with a short bench due to injuries and players still participating in football, lost the game, 4-2.
Grizzly Midget Minor coach Tim Cota prepared a game plan to emphasize puck control and discipline. The plan proved successful as the Grizzlies frustrated Mullen for a scoreless first period.
In the second period, the Grizzlies got on the board first as Joseph Capraro grabbed a Mullen pass out of the air in front of the Mullen goal, and quickly shot it past the goaltender for 1-0 lead. The advantage did not last for long, as Mullen answered with a goal less than a minute later. The second period ended all tied at 1.
Mullen scored first in the third period to go up 2-1, but the lead did not last long as Grizzly Quenton Henry directed a perfect pass from teammate Dawson Quint past the Mullen goaltender to tie the game at 2.
Even with a stingy performance by Grizzly goaltender Alex Parrish, who stopped 36 of 40 shots, the depth of the Mullen bench proved too much for the Glenwood. Mullen scored two more times to round out the final score.
The discipline stressed by Coach Cota was evident by the two minutes in Grizzly penalties compared to the sixteen minutes by Mullen.
On Sunday morning, Mullen was hoping to take advantage of what had to be a very tired team of Grizzly skaters. Mullen scored first a little over five minutes into the first period on what would end up being the game-winning goal.
For the remainder of the game, the Grizzly offense could not get anything past the Mullen goaltender and Grizzly goaltender Alex Parrish came up strong again, stopping 32 of 33 shots.
The Grizzly Midget Minor hockey team is off until Dec. 12 when it travels to Greeley. By then, Glenwood's roster will have increased by at least three players.

Grizzly Midget Major team falls to Arapahoe
After two tough losses the previous weekend in Denver, the Grizzly Midget Major A hockey team was hoping to bounce back against Arapahoe in its first home game at the Glenwood Ice Rink on Saturday night. After playing tight for a period, Arapahoe pulled away for a 6-2 win.
The Grizzlies had no penalties and two goals in the first period for a 2-all tie. The Grizzly goals were by Tony Bosco, with assists from Levi Fetterhoff and Daniel Abshire, and Quenton Henry, with an assist from Cameron Dacuma.
In the second and third periods, the Grizzlies constantly found themselves shorthanded with an uncharacteristically high eight penalties. Arapahoe took advantage and scored four times, including three power-play goals, to round out the final score.
The Grizzly Midget Major A is hosting Regis on Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Glenwood Ice Rink. More information is available at www.grizzlyhockey.org.
