Big third quarter pushes Palisade past Rifle
RIFLE, Colorado — A second-half comeback lifted Palisade to a 59-53 boys basketball win over host Rifle on Friday.The Bulldogs dug out of a 30-23 halftime deficit by outscoring the Bears 20-8 in the third quarter.
Tyler Rust and Ryan Davis led Rifle, now 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the 4A Western Slope League, with 15 points apiece.
“It was quite a rough game,” Bears coach Chris Lowther said. “Both sides just played hard.”
Cardinals topped in OT
CEDAREDGE, Colorado — Grand Valley's boys dropped a 47-45 overtime heartbreaker at Cedaredge on Friday.“It was a great game,” Cardinals coach Jake Higuera said. “We missed a lot of opportunities to take the lead. We missed a lot of free throws. [Cedaredge is] a resilient team. They battled back and hit some huge shots. They definitely deserved that win.”
Tyler Radel led Higuera's squad with 11 points.
Grand Valley fell to 4-2 overall and to 2-2 in the 3A WSL with the loss, while Cedaredge improved to 4-3 overall and to 2-2 in league.
Demons pick up road win
DELTA, Colorado — Glenwood Springs' boys improved to 5-5 overall and to 1-0 in 4A WSL play with a road win at Delta on Friday. No score was available at press time.
Hotchkiss outguns Coal Ridge
HOTCHKISS, Colorado — Coal Ridge's boys couldn't keep pace with undefeated Hotchkiss on Friday, losing 85-65.Nursing a 20-16 lead after one quarter, the Bulldogs blew the game open by outscoring the Titans 26-12 in the second.
Nick Coleman led Hotchkiss (5-0 overall, 3-0 in the 3A WSL) with 20 points.
Andy Smedra led Coal Ridge (0-6, 0-4) with 18 points. Nathan Terrin scored 14.
Glenwood downed at Delta
DELTA, Colorado — Unable to overcome a disadvantage in the size department, Glenwood Springs' girls limped to a 58-44 defeat in Friday's 4A WSL opener at Delta.The Demons fell behind early, connecting on just four first-half field goals. The Panthers led 33-19 at the half.
Kenzie Kuhn scored 22 points to pace the Demons, now 4-5 overall.
Jenni Jones led Delta (2-3) with 25 points.
“It was ugly,” Glenwood coach Bryan Derby said. “They had a lot of size. We just got outrebounded.”
Fast start lifts Hotchkiss past Coal Ridge
HOTCHKISS, Colorado — Falling behind 15-5 after a quarter, Coal Ridge's girls never fully recovered in a 57-45 loss at Hotchkiss on Friday.Chasity Gonzales led the Titans (2-4 overall, 1-3 in the 3A WSL) with 14 points. Tori Verdieck had 10, Samantha Wilson nine and Brianna Rhodes eight.
Cece Pieper led Hotchkiss with 19 points. Amy Miller added 15 as the Bulldogs improved to 3-2 overall and to 2-1 in league with the win.
