Have a heart — fill the cart

Thanks to the generous support of individuals and businesses, in 2009 LIFT-UP was able to help many of our neighbors in need through its food pantries, Extended Table soup kitchen and other avenues. Though the community is especially generous during the holidays, the need is great year-round. To help keep LIFT-UP's pantry filled, members of the First Presbyterian Church of Glenwood Springs will be collecting food in grocery carts in front of City Market and Safeway Feb. 13 and 14.

In particular, LIFT-UP is in need of the following nonperishable foods: dried or canned meals and soups, tuna or other canned fish or meat, pasta, rice, canned fruit, peanut butter and jelly, cereal and canned milk. Archaeology society meeting

The Roaring Fork Chapter of the Colorado Archaeological Society will meet on Monday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1016 Cooper Ave., Glenwood. The program will be a video titled “Spirit of the Mask” about the myths, rituals and ceremonies of the northwest coast Native Americans. Anyone interested is invited to attend. CARE event

Colorado Animal Rescue presents its “Fall in Love Feline Frenzy Adopathon” Feb. 9-16 and an Adoption day at Petco on Sunday, Feb. 14, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Landfill closed

The West Garfield County Landfill will be closed on Monday, Feb. 15, in observance of the Presidents Day holiday. The landfill will reopen on Tuesday, Feb. 16, with its normal operating hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

GSHS Percussion Ensemble show

Don't miss the premier of the ensemble's 2010 competitive percussion piece. This year the GSHS Percussion Ensemble is performing an original composition written especially for this ensemble. “Where the Rivers Meet” was written by Mike Nevin of Philadelphia. Mr. Nevin visited Glenwood Springs last year to conduct a workshop with the ensemble. He was inspired by our area and set his inspiration to music.

In addition to “Where the Rivers Meet,” the show will feature several other percussion performances. Because of a capacity crowd last year, two performances have been scheduled this year at the Jeannie Miller Auditorium at GSHS: 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, and 7 p.m. Monday, March 1.

Cost is $10 for adults/$5 for students with 100 percent of ticket sales used to support the percussion ensemble.

Advanced tickets will be available from any ensemble member, the GSHS music department, the Glenwood Chamber or by calling 945-2747.

Tickets will be available at the door. All tickets are general admission seating.

Introductory Writing Class

Mary Peace Finley is back for her second workshop in creative stories for seniors. She Is a member of the Colorado Author's League, Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, Women Writing the West and Western Writers of America.

The workshop will be Tuesday, Feb. 9, from 2-4 p.m., at Senior Matters at the Third Street Center, 520 S. Third St. (Old Elementary School) in Carbondale.

Mary's passion in writing has leaded her to teach classes and workshops in writing. She has given book talks in the local communities. “The book talks, author talks, writing workshops and classes I give are for all ages. In September I'll be working with a group of senior citizens to evoke their stories.”

The first workshop was so successful, she has returned to start a second workshop.

There is no fee for the course. Donations will be gladly accepted. Bring your own writing tools (paper and pencils), snacks and drinks. We anticipate that there will be three to four sessions. Future classes will be announced.
