Glenwood Percussion Ensemble finishes sixth at Worlds

The Glenwood Springs High School Percussion Ensemble returned from last weekend's WGI World Championships at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio with a sixth place finish.

The GSHS team, under the direction of Adam Solomon, captured the attention of fellow competitors, coaches, and WGI event staff in its first-ever appearance at Worlds.

Earlier this spring, the ensemble captured second-place finishes at the regional and state competitions, finishing just behind Golden High School, which took first place at the World's competition among drumming ensembles from all over the country.

The Glenwood ensemble will perform its Worlds composition, "Where the Rivers Meet: Impressions of Glenwood Springs," at 2:45 p.m. today at the GSHS auditorium. The public is welcome to attend.

"I have returned from WGI humbled by what our students, parents, school and community have achieved in such a short time with Percussion Ensemble," percussion team parent Kathy Keeler said. "It is amazing what can be accomplished, with a vision, perseverance, hard work and talent."

Added parent Stan Orr, "When taken as a whole, the thing that is most impressive is how well the kids and Adam, their instructor, did facing world class competition. Here was little Glenwood in only its third year of existence in concert class, a 'ragtag' team of young and determined musical prodigies who survived a change in instructors at the beginning of their season, little minivans hauling them around, competing against teams with full music department staffs/directors, tractor trailers for hauling equipment and custom chartered buses who have been doing world competitions for 20 years.

"I don't think it can be understated what the kids accomplished," Orr said.
