Roaring Fork Roller Derby League holding two fundraisers

The newly minted Roaring Fork Roller Derby League is holding a fundraiser tonight at 9 p.m. at the Bayou Cajun Restaurant (919 Grand Ave., Glenwood Springs) and another at Dos Gringos (588 Highway 133, Carbondale) at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11.

Both fundraising events will feature a screening of the roller derby movie “Whip It.” There will be food and drink specials, dancing to a live D.J. and a silent auction. A $5 donation is suggested at the door.

Schleck's Tour de California bicycle is up for raffle

The Glenwood Springs Elks Lodge is raffling off a bicycle formerly owned by professional racer Andy Schleck. Schleck rode the American Flyer Team Saxo Bank bike in the Tour of California.

Tickets are $100 per ticket or six tickets for $500. This is a limited raffle, with only 120 tickets up for sale. All proceeds go toward building a spinning room at Glenwood Springs High School.

The drawing will be held on Saturday, Sept. 4, at the Glenwood Springs Elks Lodge.

High school football rules clinic slated for Aug. 31

If you are involved with high school football in any way — fan, parent, stadium announcer, radio announcer, newspaper sports reporter, chain crew or whatever — then this night is for you. A couple of local high school football officials are hosting a rules clinic for all high school and middle school fans. The meeting is Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. at Glenwood Springs High School.

If you want to know more about high school football rules (they're not what you see on TV), attend this informal night of rules discussion and just a question-and-answer period.

Youth flag football with Carbondale Recreation

Are you ready for some football?

Join Carbondale Recreation for some introductory flag football fun. Practice passing, catching, punting and kicking. Learn the basic rules of flag football and participate in organized scrimmages. The program is for first- and second-grade boys and girls. Class will meet Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept.13-Oct. 6, at Sopris Park from 3:30-4:30 p.m. and the fee is $35.

Lead King Loop invades Marble on Sept. 19

The sixth annual Lead King Loop charity races are slated for Sunday, Sept. 19, in Marble. Course options include a 25K, 12.5K and kids race. Race proceeds benefit Marble Charter School. Race day also features lunch, a pint glass, a tech-T, a raffle and marble prizes.

Demon 5K Citizens Race is Sept. 1

The Glenwood Springs High School cross country program is holding the third annual Demon 5K Citizens Race/Fun Run on Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 5:30 p.m.

Runners will tackle a mostly-off road course in the field across from the school's football stadium. The entry fee is $15 and all proceeds benefit the Glenwood cross country team.

Canyon Shuffle is Oct. 2

Runners and walkers are invited to stretch their legs for literacy Saturday, Oct. 2, in the Glenwood Canyon Shuffle Race for Literacy. A half-marathon (13.1-mile) run and relay race and five-kilometer (3.1-mile) run/walk will take place on the bike path in the scenic Glenwood Canyon.

The half marathon begins at 9 a.m. and the 5K starts at 10 a.m. Buses will take participants from the finish line at the No Name exit of Glenwood Canyon to the race starting points. Relay teams of up to five people are welcome to participate in the half marathon. Team sponsorships by companies, service clubs, etc., are encouraged.

The entry fee is $30 per person in the half marathon, and $75 per team, and the 5K cost is $20 per person. A late fee of $5 per person and $15 per team applies to entries received after Sept. 25. The race entry fee includes a long-sleeved T-shirt.

Volunteers needed for Tri-Glenwood Triathlon

Adventure racing coming to Glenwood Springs on Sept. 11

Gravity Play Sports' newest venue for its Adventure Xstreams race circuit is Glenwood Springs. On Saturday, Sept. 11, the circuit will make its stop here.

A 50-mile course asks racers to mountain bike, kayak, trail run, rappel, trek through a cave, take a scenic gondola ride and navigate an optional river boarding section.

Derbs Softball Tournament hits Two Rivers Park Sept. 10-12

The second annual Derbs Softball Tournament is slated for Sept. 10-12 at Two Rivers Park in Glenwood Springs.

The cost of the tournament, which supports local high school athletic programs, is $250 per team. There are men's and co-ed divisions. First-place teams receive T-shirts. Spots will go to the first eight paid teams.
