GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — Taylor Walters said that, when it comes to golf, it's rare that everything's working well at the same time. At Monday's Glenwood Springs Invitational girls golf tournament, the Rifle High sophomore had one of the rare days.
Carding a season-best 85 at Glenwood Springs Golf Club, Walters beat out Moffat County's Nike Cleverly by seven strokes for medalist honors. Montrose's Kala Keltz was third, shooting a 93 for her two go-arounds on the nine-hole course.
“It's my best round so far this year,” Walters said. “I've been kind of struggling. Either I hit it well, but I'm not putting and chipping well, or I'm putting and chipping, but I don't hit it well. Today, I kind of felt like it was all coming together a little bit.”
The highlight of Walters' day: a birdie on her second tangle with the par-4 fifth hole.
After smacking a long drive right of the hole onto the rough, Walters knocked her second shot to within about eight feet of the hole to set up the birdie putt.
“That was probably my highlight,” Walters said. “It was really fun. I didn't do too bad on any of the others.”
Monday's Glenwood win was Walters' second tourney title this season. She also won at Delta back on March 17.
Walters' efforts helped Rifle, which features players from both Rifle and Coal Ridge high schools, to a third-place team finish. The Bears, who posted a team score of 299, got a 103 from Kieryn Hammond and a 111 from Alyx Carter.
Placing five golfers in the top 10, Montrose won the team title with a 287. Behind the third-place Keltz were Baylee Hawk (fourth, 95), Justine Johnson (tie for fifth, 99), Briana Gatt (tied for seventh, 100) and Madison Gill (tied for seventh, 100).
Moffat County finished second in the team hunt with a 291. Monday's tournament featured 10 varsity teams.

Weast's 101 leads Demons
Led by Sierra Weast's 101, Glenwood Springs took seventh in the team standings on Monday.“This is kind of the year she's getting things together and working with her swing coach,” first-year Demons coach Clem Michel, an assistant pro at Aspen Glen Golf Club, said of Weast. “She was 13 shots better than her last tournament. That's a pretty big jump.”
Sarah Davis shot a 122 and Syddnie Evans a 127 to round out Glenwood's 350 team score.
Johnson, Daly shoot 117 to pace Skiers
