Editor's note: The Garfield County Sheriff's Department reports the following incidents and arrests. Summonses or arrests merely indicate an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless found guilty in court.
Vandalism: Deputies are investigating a report of graffiti sprayed on sheds at a mobile home park near Rifle on June 23.
Harassment: Deputies were called on a traffic complaint to County Road 122 at 3:11 p.m. on June 23. Justin Thyme Helmer, 35, of Carbondale, was cited for harassment.
Assault: A county jail inmate faces additional charges after a disturbance at the jail at 10:30 a.m. on June 24. Casey James Hanas, 25, of Carbondale, is charged on suspicion of criminal attempt, possession while under the influence and second degree assault on a police officer.
Impersonation: Deputies stopped a vehicle at 3 p.m. on June 24 at County Road 100 and Bristlecone Drive near Carbondale. The driver of the vehicle, Mauricio Perea, 20, of Carbondale, was arrested on suspicion of criminal attempt, possession of forged documents, speeding 10 mph over the limit and criminal impersonation.
Underage drinking: Deputies contacted an intoxicated juvenile in the Rifle area at 5:25 a.m. on June 25. The juvenile was cited for underage drinking and released to their parents.
Fires: Deputies were called to a fire in the 3000 block of Howard Avenue in Rifle at 1 p.m. on June 25. They determined the fire had been started by two juveniles playing with a lighter. Deputies responded to a brush fire in the 100 block of Carson Circle on Battlement Mesa at 3 p.m. on June 25. The fire was put out and there are no suspects.
Warrant arrest: Officers contacted a man on Highway 6 near Rifle at 1 p.m. on June 25. Edwin Montes Rascon, 19, of Rifle, was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear. He was later released on bond.
Driving without a valid license: Deputies stopped a vehicle in the 3000 mile of County Road 114 outside of Glenwood Springs at 1:30 p.m. on June 25. Ernesto Colmenares Martinez, 28, of Glenwood Springs, was cited for driving with his vision obstructed, driving without a valid license and possession of a forged document.
Driving under the influence: A motorist called 911 to report a driver speeding and tailgating on I-70 at 7 p.m. on June 25. Deputies observed the same vehicle and stopped it. Hipolito Argueta Portilo, 40, of Glenwood Springs, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, speeding 25 mph over the limit, failing to use turn signal, weaving and reckless driving. He was later released on bond.
Accident: Deputies are assisting the Colorado State Patrol in investigating an accident that occurred in the 200 block of Meadow Lane near Glenwood Springs at 3:50 a.m. on June 26.
Unattended death: Deputies are investigating the death of an infant that occurred south of Rifle, reported on June 26.
Trespass: Deputies took a report of a trespass that occurred near New Castle on June 26.
Warrant arrest: While investigating a crime in the 10000 mile of County Road 319 on June 26, deputies arrested Eric Alexzandor Sanchez, 24, of Rifle, on a warrant for failure to appear. He was later freed on bond.
Driving without a valid license: Deputies stopped a vehicle on Megan Avenue at 3 p.m. on June 27. Brian Ross Rhoads, 40, of Rifle, was cited on suspicion of driving without a valid license, driving with expired license plates and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Warrant arrest: Deputies stopped a vehicle for speeding on County Road 335 south of Silt at 9:50 p.m. on June 27. The driver was found to have a warrant for failure to appear. Josey Lee Varley, 27, of Carbondale, was arrested on the warrant and cited for speeding. He was later released on bond.
Investigation: Deputies are investigating a possible forgery reported in Battlement Mesa on June 28.
Vandalism: Deputies took reports of damaged mailboxes on County Road 237 and LaFrenz Circle north of Silt and a case of possible trespass and criminal mischief in the 3000 mile of County Road 241 north of New Castle on June 28.
Intoxicated pedestrian on highway: Deputies were called on a report of a pedestrian walking on I-70 near the 110 mile marker in South Canyon at 5:25 a.m. on June 28. When they contacted Tobin Frank Ethington, 30, of Cortez, he was uncooperative and appeared intoxicated. He was arrested for walking on a highway while under the influence, obstructing a highway, resisting arrest, obstructing a police officer, violation of a court order, possession of less than two ounces of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and on a warrant from Cortez for failure to appear.
Driving under the influence: Deputies stopped a motorist for a missing tail light on I-70 at mile 81 near Rulison at 4:30 a.m. on June 29. Cynthia Ann Nielsen, 43, of Meeker was cited for driving under the influence and for a defective tail light.
Investigation: Detectives are investigating a report of possible child abuse near Silt, reported on June 29.
