A New Castle man was killed in a motorcycle accident south of De Beque Sunday night, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
John F. Douglas, 53, of New Castle, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred on Mesa County Road 45 1/2 about three miles south of De Beque.
State Patrol troopers responded to the crash around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. According to reports, Douglas was southbound on a 1982 Harley Davidson with one other rider when he went off the roadway while rounding a curve.
As he tried to steer back onto the roadway, the front tire tripped on the road edge and the motorcycle went down on its right side, throwing Douglas to the pavement. He was reportedly not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The accident remains under investigation, but alcohol is considered a factor, according to the State Patrol.
