YouthZone's 21st annual Kiss-n-Squeal fundraiser has started, and Team Kids are running strong with a lead of 6,292 - 4,450 over their rival, Alpine Bank.
Each year community members volunteer to be Kiss-n-Squeal contestants. Contestants compete to raise funds, with each $1 they raise serving as one vote.
Generally, the contestant that raises the most money gets to kiss a pig. This year, however, it's a showdown. With only two teams competing, the winner of the event will choose if they kiss the pig or the losing team kisses the pig.
The team that raises the most money chooses who gets to kiss a live, squealing oinker! It's great fun.
The showdown is between Tom Kenning of Alpine Bank and Team Kids: Frederick Moreno, Viry Gonzales, Marithe Munoz, Gicell Barragan, Sierra Weast, Lily Ruiz, Sonia Cortez and Amber Pagni.
The goal for the event is to raise $110,000.
Everyone can help YouthZone achieve this goal. There's an online auction at www.youthzoneauction.com offering golf packages, restaurant certificates, doggie items and self-care treatments. Supporters can also buy a $10 raffle ticket for a first prize of $1,000 and second prize of $500.
In each case, every donation and every dollar counts. All event costs are covered by sponsors, so every dollar donated goes directly to YouthZone, which aims to empower and strengthen youth and families.
The fundraising event ends Thursday, July 28, with a finale from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Two Rivers Park. The Glenwood Springs Noon Rotary Club is hosting a free barbecue from 6:30-7 p.m., followed by the pucker-up finish.
Other events prior to the finale are:
July 14, Raffle ticket sales at City Market, Carbondale, 2-6 p.m.
July 15, Alpine Appreciation Day, Grand Avenue Alpine Bank, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
July 19, Moe's Southwest Grill, Glenwood Springs, 4-9 p.m., 10 percent of proceeds to Team Kids
July 21, Elk Creek Mining Co., New Castle, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., 10 percent of proceeds to Team Kids
July 26, Moe's Southwest Grill, Glenwood Springs, 4-9 p.m., 10 percent of proceeds to Team Kids
