I was at the Garfield Re-2 school board meeting on March 13. As a parent, I am really concerned about this decision. What concerns me more, though, is the way the board handled it. I don't think the public knew how seriously the board was considering this until the last board meeting on Feb. 28. I think the least the board could have done was hold a community meeting. The board made a decision behind closed doors and were not interested in public opinion. They looked at the research and realized that the community would eventually come around.I am also concerned that the board has no real idea on how this will work. It does not make any sense to me that they voted for something that has not been thought through or discussed thoroughly with the people that it impacts the most. How is the day going to be structured? Will the district provide a snack for the kids in the afternoon? How is the bus schedule going to work? How can the board expect a small community like New Castle or Silt to offer day camps? Our recreation centers struggle to get through a soccer season and now the school board wants them to host day camps. What about the families on the free and reduced lunch program? Those families have a hard enough time as it is and now the board is putting unnecessary stress on them. These are all points that should have been discussed as a community before this was passed. The board wants us to support them, but they can't even answer our questions.I understand that serving on the school board is a very thankless job. Don't get me wrong, we do appreciate all the work they do. I also understand that this may seem like the lesser of the two evils compared to closing a school. I just feel like the board made up its mind before the meeting and nothing was going to change that.Brandi SmytheNew Castle
