Letters to the Editor - June 7, 2012

Approximately three weeks ago, I finished a little neighborhood project here at Palomino Park in Rifle, a trading library, for our neighborhood children and adults who may not have transportation to the public library down town. We stocked it with a variety of books, as did our neighbors, and it was being well used. People took a book and left a book.

This ended on Saturday, June 2, when someone pulled up to our duplex, while we were at a family party, loaded the cabinet in the back of their truck and drove off. Now this was a nice little cabinet, handmade pine with redwood accents. It had a base stained red with a green roof and stood about six feet tall.

Please understand we aren't accusing anyone of theft outright. There was a handmade sign on the side that said free books, so we do believe it is possible someone misunderstood.

The point of our writing this is to maybe catch the attention of whoever took the library cabinet. Bring it back, no questions asked, no charges pressed. However, a police report was filed, and if it is found by the Rifle police, we'll go forward from there. Still, we would feel our neighborhood would best benefit from a no questions asked return.

Isn't it beyond belief that NASCAR driver Kurt Busch was fined $50,000 and put on an extended period of probation for "verbally abusing" a member of the media?

Has there ever been a member of the media subjected to that kind of punishment, especially considering the frequency of their abuse? According to a "news release," Busch had a confrontation with a Sporting News reporter after last Saturday's Nationwide Series race. Apparently, the incident resulted from Busch responding in an implied threatening manner "because you ask me stupid questions."

Whoa!!! How off base and uninformed can this race driver be? Doesn't he understand it is the role of the media to ask stupid questions? Hasn't he observed our prominent politicians have set a precedent by always answering these dumb questions, regardless of how mundane they may be?

Wake up, fellow citizens. Abusing the media is just another of America's latest travesties. God bless America!
