Little League baseball players from across the West Slope have taken swings and thrown pitches in Rifle for the last few weeks, with dreams of playing in the Little League World Series.
The Colorado District 1 Little League tournament at Deerfield Park started on July 5 with five all-star teams chosen from among teams in each area: Colorado River Valley (Rifle), Grand Mesa, Ignacio, Durango and Three Rivers (Glenwood Springs).
League director Josh Wright said the champion would be decided between all-star teams from the Glenwood Springs, Grand Mesa and Orchard Mesa leagues. The championship game was scheduled for June 11 at Deerfield Park. If a double elimination game was needed, it was set for July 12 at Coal Ridge High School outside Silt, Wright said.
The 13- and 14-year-old junior boys league teams are vying for a chance to advance to the state tournament on July 19 - 23 on the Front Range. Those winners go on to the regional tournament on Aug. 3-7 in Albuquerque, N.M. Regional champions will vie for a shot at the Little League World Series in Taylor, Mich. on Aug. 12-18.
