'Cowboy Christmas' good to Rifle's Vondette

Rifle's CJ. Vondette is on a roll and hard on the rodeo trail.

The end of June, the Fourth of July holiday, and most of the rest of the month are known throughout the rodeo world as "Cowboy Christmas."

You could say Vondette got her fair share of gifts.

Steamboat Springs hosts a weekly Professional Rodeo Cowboy's Association rodeo every Friday and Saturday night throughout the summer.

The July 27-28 champion was Vondette, aboard her AQHA Horse of the Year, Cache A Mount, with a time of 17.72, and paycheck of $782.

On July 20-21, Vondette earned a check for a fourth place finish with a time of 17.91, also in Steamboat Springs.

To finish out the month of June, on June 22-23, Vondette placed eighth in Steamboat Springs with her run of 18.24.

In Rock Springs, Wyo., on July 26-28, Vondette finished second in the Red Desert Classic PRCA Rodeo's barrel race with an impressive 17.42 for a $1,245 paycheck.

July 12 saw Vondette back on the Western Slope of Colorado, collecting a paycheck for 10th place in the Gunnison Cattlemen's Days PRCA Rodeo barrel race.

Estes Park's Rooftop PRCA Rodeo also treated Vondette to a check on July 10-15, once again ranking her among the top 10 competitors.

Lehi's (Utah) annual Roundup Rodeo saw Vondette take a victory lap for the fastest run of the performance. Competing before a standing room only crowd, Vondette grabbed a $592 paycheck for a sixth place finish overall.

The Colorado Pro Rodeo Association gave Vondette its share of money as well, with the 21-year-old picking up a check for fourth place in Westcliffe on Sunday, July 1.

All told, Vondette competed in seven rodeos, as well as the PRCA rodeos at the Greeley Independence Stampede; Cheyenne Frontier Days; the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo in Vernal, Utah; and Evergreen, Grover, Elizabeth and Eagle in Colorado for a total of 14 rodeos in about three weeks.

The Colorado and Wyoming paychecks will move Vondette up in the Mountain States PRCA Circuit Standings. The Utah rodeos will improve her world ranking as well. Currently, she is among the top 20 rookie barrel racers in the world and the top 200 in the PRCA standings worldwide.
