CYCLING: The focus is on two-wheel fun

The Grand Valley Kids' Ride is the result of the passion for cycling that the founders of Desert Rat Tours have. A few years ago, we decided that a perfect way to give back to the community and share our love for cycling would be to involve families in a friendly not-for-profit way. Thus, the Grand Valley Kids' Rides were conceived.

While the weather permits, we conduct a weekly ride at one of the local mountain bike areas or on the pavement of the Riverfront Trail. With so much available in the Grand Valley, there is plenty of choice to make the ride fun. And fun is the key ingredient to making the kids' rides successful. Focusing on the fun ensures that future rides will be welcomed and that the young cyclists continue in the sport. One of the great ways we capture the fun is to incorporate cookouts at the end of the ride. This upcoming two months have a few events on the calendar.

• Monday, Aug. 13, River Front Trail, 5:30 p.m. at the Junior Service League Park.

This is a kid pleaser, the children love it because they can socialize and talk with their friends, old and new while they're riding. We meet at the Junior Service League Park (where 24 Road turns into Redlands Parkway) at 5:30 and wind our way on bike paths to the Botanical Gardens. After we make our way back to the park, we fire up the grill. Participants bring food and drinks for their families.

• Saturday, Aug. 18-Sunday, Aug. 19, 18 Road Campground.

This is an end of the summer event to say goodbye to summer and welcome the new school year. We will be setting up early in the day to establish a camp. Just look for the Desert Rat Van and that's where we will be. Give a us a call beforehand, to let us know you will be joining us (970-261-8101 or 970-260-4843). Once camp is established, we will be able to coordinate different ride for all levels of riders.

• Monday, Aug. 27, Riverfront Trail, 5:30 p.m. at the Junior Service League Park.

The same format as on the 13th. And again, families are welcome to bring something to put on the grill.

• Monday, Sept. 3, Labor Day, Rustler's Loop, noon, Rustler's Loop Trailhead in the Kokopelli Loops Area.

This is a beginner mountain bike trail, however, the participants must be comfortable on a bike. We will be bringing the grill out again for those that wish to stay and cook out, and again, families need to bring their own food.

With all the rides, a working bicycle and a properly fitting helmet is a must for all participants, along with an accompanying adult. For more information call us at 970-261-8101 or 970-260-4843, or seek us out on Facebook at "Grand Valley Kids' Rides."
