GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado - Toni Carsten, an assistant at the Glenwood Springs Branch Library and longtime resident, is all smiles.
Carsten is the latest winner in the Glenwood Springs Downtown Parking Perks promotion. For riding her bike to and from work each day, she was awarded $500 in redeemable tokens for products and services at any of 20 downtown businesses.
Earlier this summer she registered her bike on the parking perks website. Her bike was identified in a downtown bike rack in the latest search for a Parking Perks winner.
Downtown Parking Perks rewards commuters to the downtown for those who park vehicles in identified alternative lots and for those who ride downtown on a bicycle.
The community has voluntarily embraced both options in order to make the limited short-term parking downtown available to visitors and shoppers during construction of the new parking garage and library, said Rosa Silver, Glenwood Springs transportation manager.
Carsten rides one mile from home to work and back on her 20-year-old mountain bike. She used to walk the route.
"When I heard about the Downtown Parking Perks program, I decided I'd cycle in to have a chance at winning," she said.
How will she spend her $500 in winnings?
"This bike needs a tune-up," she said with a laugh. "And my husband and I have an anniversary coming up. I think a nice dinner out in downtown will be a part of our celebration."
The Downtown Parking Perks promotion will continue through the construction period that will conclude in fall 2013, and will award nearly $13,000 in tokens that spend like cash to registered participants.
All community members ages 18 and up are invited to participate.
