Meals on Wheels clients in Western Garfield County got a special treat Friday, Aug. 31, as ladies from the Rifle Area Chamber of Commerce's Women in Business group delivered lunches for the first-ever "Meals on Heels" event.
A women-only delivery day, meals were delivered to all Meals on Wheels clients in Parachute, Rifle, Silt and New Castle.
Grand River Hospital District's Meals on Wheels currently provides more than 1,000 meals a month, and the need is growing as each month passes.
"Some of our routes are getting so large, we are going to need to have two drivers a day to cover them," said Grand River Volunteer Manager Kaaren Peck. "We are so appreciative of the chamber's Women in Business group volunteering to deliver meals."
Meals on Wheels clients include seniors, the disabled and those recovering from surgery or illness. Peck adds that for some recipients, this is the only human contact they have each day.
"The ladies had a great time and many have indicated they can't wait to do this again," added Grand River Community Relations Associate Andrea Maddalone.
