John W. Florer, former Rifle resident, went home to the Lord on Sept. 2, 2012, at a Longmont, Colo. hospital. He was 89.
John was born Nov. 7, 1922, in Terlton, Okla., to Albert L. and Beulah (Hewitt) Florer. His grandfather and great-grandfather helped found the town during the Cherokee Strip Land Rush.
John graduated high school in Decatur, Ark. in 1942 and joined the U.S. Coast Guard to defend his country in World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater, piloting landing crafts carrying Marines to the beaches of Saipan, Tinian, Guam, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. He carried injuries all his life from burns suffered when a kamikaze hit his ship at Okinawa.
He married his high school sweetheart, Margie Randolph, on May 17, 1943, in New Orleans, La. After the war, John went into construction management, starting with the Big Thompson Project, based in Loveland. He was later assistant superintendent for construction of the Union Carbide mills in Rifle and Grand Junction. During construction, John and Margie lived on Prefontaine Mesa with their daughters, Deana and Mary Ann.
John supervised construction of ballistic missile silos and other public facilities across the country, finally retiring from the Nevada test site. He proudly helped run blood drives at the test site, and served as an usher and budget committee member for many years at First Baptist Church in Las Vegas.
He loved his family dearly and was always generous with his daughters and grandsons. He enjoyed fishing and visiting family across the west. John touched the hearts of many with his smile and dry wit, even toward the end of his life.
John was predeceased by his parents, four brothers, and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Margie; his daughters, Deana Florer Sonnesyn (David) of Longmont, Mary Ann Schelling (Gregory) of Silt; grandsons, Ryan Smith (Albina) of Monument, Devin Smith of Perth, Australia, Brandon Schelling of Taos, N.M., Dillon Schelling, and Colton Schelling, both of Silt; sister, Alberta Walls of Santa Maria, Calif. and numerous nieces and nephews.
