James Hart passed away early Wednesday morning at his home in Battlement Mesa.
Jim is joining his beloved wife, Dorothy McDonald, and his parents Katherine and James, who preceded him in death. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1928. He was a graduate of Grover Cleveland High School, where he played on championship teams in soccer, baseball, and basketball. As a high school student he played in Madison Square Garden, Ebbets Field and the Polo Grounds.
After serving in the United States Navy, Jim continued his love for sports in Springfield, Massachusetts, where he played basketball for four years and lacrosse for one year. His coaching career included Ellenville High School (Ellenville, New York) for two years and Hewlett High School (Long Island, New York) for 35 years where he coached basketball, track and field, and cross country. He was inducted into the Hewlett High School "Hall of Fame" for his exemplary leadership, outstanding teams, and state championships in track.
He will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends. Jim is survived by his son Richard (Telluride, Colorado), granddaughter Cassie Betts (Parker, Colorado), granddaughter Kellie Rowan (Denver, Colorado) and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, at All Saints Episcopal Church in Battlement Mesa.
In lieu of sending flowers, contributions can be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or The Wounded Warrior Project.
