College interest in Moeller increasing

Rifle High School senior running back Ryan Moeller has received his first scholarship offer to play college football, but the team is remaining mum on which school has made the offer.

"They have asked us not to say anything, and we have to honor that," Rifle football coach Damon Wells said.

Moeller, 6-foot, 215-pounds, also plays free safety for the Bears on defense. He had received interest from college football programs around the region before this season but no scholarship offers until recently.

Though Wells wouldn't say which school made the offer, he did confirm that the offer came from a Colorado school.

Through the top-ranked Bears' 31-3 victory against then second-ranked Palisade on Oct. 4, Moeller had a state-high 1,558 yards on 116 carries with 22 touchdowns. He had 251 yards on 22 carries - including touchdown runs of 74 and 78 yards - and an interception on defense during the Bears' victory over the Bulldogs at Grand Junction's Stoker Stadium.

According to statistics posted by MaxPreps.com on Wednesday morning, Moeller is ranked No. 16 nationally among all rushers playing 11-man football. Thomas Tyner, who plays for Aloha High School in Beaverton, Ore., just outside of Portland, leads the nation in rushing with 1,968 yards on 151 carries.

Moeller also has three interceptions for Rifle this season and is third on the team in total tackles (27), behind Coy Zang (33) and Cody Beauford (56).

Wells said that, thanks in part to Moeller's performance last week, the interest from NCAA Division I colleges has "increased significantly."

Prior to the season, Moeller had made visits to Division I schools Boise State, Wyoming and Colorado. Other schools which have shown interest in Moeller in the past include the University of Northern Colorado and Colorado State, along with Division II schools Adams State University and Colorado Mesa University.
