Maxwell Dean Stanton was born to Frank and Edna Stanton June 20, 1927 on a ranch in Collbran, Colorado, graduating from Collbran High School in 1944. He joined the Navy as an Aviation Ordnanceman on the aircraft carrier Belleau Wood and served in the South Pacific to Japan in WWII. After the service, he completed college at Western State College, marrying Willetta Crawford in 1948. Upon graduation he was a band director at Nucla, CO, Sargent, CO, New Castle, CO and last at Steamboat Springs, CO. By this time he had acquired his master's degree in music and administration. He also built and ran an A&W Root Beer stand in Steamboat Springs, selling that and moving to Glenwood Springs in 1965. He built and operated Max's Music Company at 1526 Grand Avenue for 21 years, finally selling the store and retiring. During his years in Max's Music, he directed a community band and tried out hundreds of beginning band students at schools to put them on an instrument he knew was right for them to succeed. Music was a huge part of his life in business and in his home. For the last 20 years, Max and his wife Norma Lea have made their home up Four Mile, where he enjoyed his music, boating, fishing, the Broncos and raising a big garden.
