Bryan Whiting Contributed photoThis 48-pound monster king salmon was caught by Kathy Whiting, during the summer on a 30th anniversary fishing trip with her husband, Bryan. Their guide, Jeff Hickman, helps her hold the fish. Kathy, who is the principal at Sopris Elementary in Glenwood Springs, caught this huge king with a 9 weight Spey fly rod. The Whitings were at the Alaska West fishing camp on the Kanetok River, which is about 600 miles west of Anchorage, on a 10-day trip. The river runs into the Bering Sea, and the camp is six miles up the river from the ocean. The couple caught several kings each day, with most in the 25- to 35-pound size range, but they also caught a couple over 40 pounds.
