PARACHUTE, Colorado - A Grand Valley High School student was severely injured Wednesday in an accident that occurred in the school's auto shop program, according to District 16 Superintendent Ken Haptonstall.
The student was airlifted to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, and is now reported to be in stable condition, he stated.
Haptonstall did not release the student's name or any details about the accident.
Marilyn Mondragon, the school district's executive secretary, said the accident is under investigation, and a follow-up report will be released once the investigation is complete. That's expected to be next week, she wrote in an email.
Haptonstall issued a letter to the school district's staff Wednesday informing them of the accident.
In his letter, he named several staff members who immediately rushed to assist the student, and wrote, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the student and his family."
