The Aspen Choral Society is inviting all singers to participate in the 35th annual holiday-time performances of Handel's "Messiah."Rehearsals for downvalley singers are Monday nights at 6 beginning Nov. 5. Rehearsals are at the First United Methodist Church in Glenwood Springs.Rehearsals for upvalley singers are Tuesday nights at 6 p.m. beginning Nov. 6, and are at St. Mary Catholic Church.Performances of the "Messiah" are scheduled for Dec. 11-12 in Glenwood, and Dec. 14-15 in Aspen.Everyone is invited to join the "Messiah" performances; there are no auditions. Typically, people think 4-H is for children who live in the country, but more than 25,000 young people from cities, towns and rural areas across Colorado participate in 4-H. A joint effort of CSU Extension and Garfield County, 4-H welcomes all youth ages 8-18.Garfield County also offers a noncompetitive program, Cloverbuds, for children ages 5-7.4-H has more than 150 fun projects to explore, such as photography, model rocketry, gardening and animal projects.Contact the Garfield County Extension office at 625-3969 or visit www.extension.colostate.edu/ garfieldcounty.

Glenwood Springs Elks Lodge 2286 will honor veterans of all branches of the armed services at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11. Enjoy hors d'oeuvres, beverages, guest speaker Debra Brauchler U.S. Navy (Ret.) and special recognition of the Navy and Coastguard. Also highlighted during the evening will be a video from 2011 National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic held annually at Snowmass and sponsored in part by the Elks Lodges from Glenwood Springs, Rifle and Aspen. The Elks Lodge, located on Highway 6&24 next to Glenwood Gardens, encourages veterans of all branches of the armed services to join us for this day of remembrance and recognition to those who have served our country.

The Roaring Fork School Board is hosting one more community meeting to gather input on the Two Rivers Expeditionary Learning Charter School proposal. It is set for 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Glenwood Springs Middle School, with a presentation by Jon Mann, regional director for Expeditionary Learning schools. He will be discussing the ins and outs of converting an existing school to an EL model.

Is there a book in you? Join Misheel Chuluun, local author of "Write a How-to Book in 7 Days" (authored under pen name Sam Sterling), at the New Castle Branch Library at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7. She will talk about what aspiring authors can expect to face in the publishing industry. Chuluun will discuss key mistakes new authors make; the latest developments and options in the marketing industry; and new methods for marketing, researching and publishing.

AARP Driver Safety is offering free classroom courses for veterans and their dependents nationwide. Learn proven safety strategies to maintain your confidence behind the wheel. Students at Crystal River Elementary School are searching for local veterans in the community to invite to the annual Veterans Day Celebration in November. The Veterans Day performance is at 2:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at The Orchard (Church at Carbondale) in Carbondale.
