Colorado Springs student wins Capitol Tree contest

MEEKER, Colorado - Ryan Shuster, 17, a senior at Discovery Canyon Campus in Colorado Springs, is the winner of the contest to light the 2012 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree in Washington, D.C.

Shuster was one of 5,000 children and teens in Colorado to make an ornament for the tree. His name was drawn Oct. 19, and Shuster and his family attended the cutting of the tree on Nov. 2, when his name was announced publicly.

He will travel to Washington, D.C., with his parents for the honor of flipping the switch to officially light the 2012 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree in early December.

The Capitol Christmas Tree will be in Glenwood Springs from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Glenwood Springs Mall, at the beginning of its journey east.

See the tree, sign a holiday greetings banner, see the paintings and photographs that are accompanying the tree, and meet former U.S. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, who is driving the tree across country.
