"There is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living." - Nelson Mandela
Within each of us is a little piece of resistance that keeps us from moving forward sometimes and keeps us playing small in this game of life. Have you ever noticed a time when an opportunity was presented to you and you didn't take the chance on it because you were afraid? This fear of the unknown is what keeps most people stuck in a situation that doesn't allow for forward movement.
Sometimes we hold on dearly to what we know, to the familiar, even if the familiar is not serving us and is bringing us an unfulfilled life. That fear of the unknown keeps us from our potential good and in most cases, from a better life. Which voice do you listen to? Do you listen to the voice that tries to scare you and make you believe that the familiar is safe? Or do you listen to the voice that is calling you to experience your highest good?
One night several months ago I went out to dinner at our local Thai restaurant. At the end of the meal we were given fortune cookies. My fortune read, "It could be better, but it's good enough." I have to tell you this was like fingernails on a chalkboard for me! It is very difficult for me to swallow the "settle for" pill. My belief is that no one needs to settle for just good enough! We all deserve better than good enough. I believe that at every moment we are being offered a better life. It is up to us to recognize these opportunities and then act on them with our choices.
When clients come to me and are stuck in an area of their life and want relief, we start looking at what beliefs they are holding around that particular situation. It could be about money, a relationship, a job, weight loss, health issues or any number of things. It doesn't matter what the presenting problem is, but it does matter what the beliefs regarding it are. It usually comes down to fear and resistance about the unknown.
If you could start gradually opening up to the possibility that your spirit is calling you to greater success, to a better life, to receiving all the good you deserve and living big, to not settling for "good enough," could you then imagine what might be waiting for you beyond the familiar. If you could let go of the perceived safety of the known and take a risk on the unknown it just might open doors to all sorts of opportunities. If you could trust that Spirit only wants your good to flow to you with grace, would you take the risk? Remember, we are only limited by the limits we place on ourselves.
This week my coach's request to you is to examine any area of your life that you feel stuck in. Think about settling for "good enough" and decide if that's really what you want for yourself. If there is a situation in which you feel stuck, I would ask you to start examining the beliefs you are holding regarding this issue. While you are doing this work, keep in mind that you were not born to live a life of "good enough." You were born to be magnificent...to live a life of better and better. As my coach and mentor taught me, "The better it gets, the better it gets!"
And so it is.
