Roaring Fork Valley residents pursuing education or training in healthcare are eligible to apply for an Aspen Valley Medical Foundation (AVMF) scholarship. The scholarship program provides assistance with tuition for undergraduate or graduate degree programs, conferences and training workshops in physical and behavioral health care. The New Castle Lions will host the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Nov.17, at the New Castle Community Center, 423 West Main. The Rifle, New Castle, and Gordon Cooper Branch Libraries will be closing early at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, in celebration of Thanksgiving. Fall vaccine clinics have been organized by Garfield County. For the 2012-13 flu season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older should get an annual vaccine. While currently the CDC reports very little flu activity, the season usually begins in October and can last through May.No appointments are necessary for community clinics in Garfield County. Adult flu shots or nasal mist are $20, and children's shots or nasal mist are $10, payable by cash or check. The health department accepts Medicaid, Medicare Part B and CHP+.
