Pack shoe boxes with gifts such as small toys, personal care items, stickers, school supplies and hard candy to be distributed to children in more than 100 countries who are suffering from natural disaster, war, terrorism, disease, famine or poverty.
In 2011, the Roaring Fork Valley contributed more than 1,000 shoe boxes. This year, hope to collect 1,250 shoe boxes from area families, kids, churches, schools and civic organizations by Sunday, Nov. 18.

The New Castle Lions will host the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Nov.17, at the New Castle Community Center, 423 W. Main. The Lions will provide roast turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, several varieties of dressing and beverages. Guests are invited to bring a side dish or dessert. River Center is gearing up for the River Center Angel Tree, providing a gift for a child at Christmas. The angels will be located at Alpine Bank/City Markets in Rifle, New Castle, Glenwood Springs and Carbondale and at Canyon Cleaners in Silt.
The angels designate whether it is for a boy/girl, ages and gift suggestions. Bring the gifts back to the location where you obtain the angel in a gift bag no later than Dec. 7.
