GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado - Local shopping is getting a boost this week from American Express and 3rd District Congressman Scott Tipton.
American Express has named Glenwood Springs as one of 100 communities across the country to receive $5,000 in gift cards to boost local sales on Small Business Saturday.
Today, the Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association will distribute 200 American Express gift cards valued at $25 each for shopping at local stores on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 24.
And Tipton issued a press release encouraging people to support local businesses on Small Business Saturday. He is a co-sponsor of House Resolution 793, which supports designation of Small Business Saturday along with efforts to increase awareness of the value of locally-owned small businesses.
"Small businesses are responsible for the creation of seven out of 10 new jobs in this country, and are vital to our economic recovery," Tipton said. "Small Business Saturday is a great way to get a jump on holiday shopping while supporting these community businesses, stimulating the local economy, and strengthening Main Street.
Small Business Saturday falls between Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, and Cyber Monday, the Monday after Thanksgiving. Saturday is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses and their communities.
In Glenwood Springs, American Express gift cards will be given, one per person, to the first 200 people to stop by the chamber's visitor center at 802 Grand Ave., starting at 9 a.m. today. The visitor center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, although there's no guarantee on how long the cards will last.
"Let's create wealth for the community and put $5,000 directly into our local economy on Saturday" said Marianne Virgili, president and CEO of the Glenwood Springs Chamber.
The chamber will also be giving away tote bags and balloons.
