I am writing about what has become an obsession for me in hopes it can become at least thought provoking for everyone.
Current global climate change events should make it clear to all that we are facing an uncertain and, I believe, increasingly desperate future. Unquestionably the current and accelerating use of fossil fuels is causing the destructive weather we see now.
Extreme and ambiguous weather patterns will inhibit food production while, coincidentally, we over-fish and poison our oceans, and dry up our rivers. In fact, these changes are already happening.
Bill McKibben, a knowledgeable advocate of attempting to rein in the accelerating addition of carbon dioxide to our atmosphere, a cause of temperature increases, is the head of the 350.org grassroots movement that is touring the country. He is the author of the first book about global warming "The End of Nature," published in 1989. McKibben will be speaking in Boulder on Dec. 2. The tour is aptly titled, "Do the Math."
Going hand and hand with climate action is another issue which a purported 75 percent of the country agrees upon: campaign finance reform. Because Congress will not reform itself, reform will involve the tremendous effort of a constitutional amendment. Now is the time, not one year before a presidential election. And if our president and Congress cannot be moved on these vital issues, it also may be time for a progressive green third party, unbeholden to moneyed interests. We have ignored the heavy lifting of democracy too long.
Now we must face the consequences of our energy use, and change ourselves, and the fossil fuel economy we blindly depend upon, or our world will become a very hostile, ugly place. Now is the time.
