Grand Valley Books celebrates 'Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day'

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day was founded three years ago by a mother, and is now celebrated all over the world. This year the event lands on Saturday, Dec. 1, and will be celebrated locally at Grand Valley Books, 350 Main St. "For a lot of children, their parents buy books for them - and the children don't end up going," Grand Valley Books owner Margie Wilson said. "It's an event that celebrates children's literature. It's special for a child, coming in and picking out a book of their own." When author Jenny Milchman's children were young she'd take them to bookstores for storytime. She decided to declare the holiday as a way to "expose as many kids as possible to this joy," of books and bookstores, she wrote on the event's website. She wanted all children to know the pleasure of spending time in a bookstore - "of being drawn into a magic world for a while, then being left to choose treasures on the shelf." "Bookstores hold a place in the hearts and times of our community. They are places to discover an author, a story, a life. Nothing affords the conversation and interaction among books and book lovers that a bookstore does," she wrote.Wilson will celebrate the day at Grand Valley Books by inviting children 15 and under to enter a drawing to win a $50 gift certificate."There will also be door prizes throughout the day," Wilson said. Plus, someone will be reading stories, she added. While Grand Valley Books is the only local shop celebrating the event, Barnes and Noble Booksellers, 2451 Patterson Road, will hold two events Saturday, that could also interest children. At 10:30 a.m., Judy Tirpack will conduct an "Elf on the Shelf" storytime, followed by a craft activity for kids. Later, from 2-4 p.m., local author Wendy Silvano will sign copies of her picture book "Turkey Claus."In the United States last year, 400 bookstores participated in the Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day. Shops in Australia, Canada and the UK also celebrated the event. Other Western Slope stores participating in Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day, include Booksellers in Aspen, Maria's Bookshop in Durango, and Off the Beaten Path in Steamboat Springs.Grand Valley books is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. On Saturday, Dec. 15, at Grand Valley Books, local author Frank Daniels will sign copies of his children's book "Ptimothy Ptarmigan," with illustrations by Karl Nicholason.
