HEALTHSMART: The signs of mental illness

Of the more than 200 forms of mental illness, some are more common in women and others in men. A study published by the American Psychological Association finds that men tend toward substance abuse or antisocial disorders, while women are more apt to experience anxiety or depression. In fact, statistics show that women experience depression at twice the rate of men.

Left untreated, mental illness can get worse; catch symptoms early, and you can take steps to help reduce its severity, or you may delay or prevent it entirely. Talk to your doctor if you have any of these signs:

• Unexplained problems with concentration, memory or logic.

• Growing inability to cope with daily problems

• Mood swings

• Social withdrawal

• Excessive fears, anxieties

• Dramatic changes in eating, sleeping or personal hygiene

• Delusions or hallucinations

• Unexplained ailments

• Suicidal thoughts

The Doctors, which airs 2 p.m. locally on ABC, is an Emmy-winning daytime TV show with OB/GYN Dr. Lisa Masterson, pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears, ER physician Dr. Travis Stork, and plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon. For more information, visit www.thedoctorstv.com.
