The New Castle Recreation Department is offering a variety of volleyball programs this winter for both youth and adults.

During the month of December, New Castle Recreation is offering mini-tournaments for adults on Tuesday evenings, Dec. 4, 11 and 18, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Riverside Middle School.

The format will change each week depending on the number of participants, and may include doubles, triples, quads and sixes play. Registration fees are $5 per player at the door.

New Castle Rec's popular Tuesday adult mixed quads league begins in mid-January and is ideal for both recreational and competitive teams. Teams are required to have a minimum of one female on the court during play and the league is self-officiated. The registration fees are $120 per team and the deadline is Jan. 11.

Spike It Youth Volleyball is a new program for children ages 8 to 14 and will be held on Tuesday evenings once a week for six weeks. The focus of the program will be on teaching and developing the basic skills of the sport. It will include weekly drills and scrimmage games. The registration fee is $40, and the program dates are Jan. 22-Feb. 26.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, New Castle Recreation will host the Winter Blast Quads Tournament beginning at 9:30 a.m. Teams can be any combination of male and/or female players, and the format will be pool play, with teams placed in playoff divisions based on their pool play results. The registration fee is $80 per team by Feb. 4 or $100 after that date.

Registration for these programs can be done online at www.newcastlerec.com or by phone at 984-3352.

In the list of All-3A Western Slope League volleyball players published in Friday's Post Independent, Coal Ridge's Paige Ryan was incorrectly reported as receiving an honorable mention. She actually made the first team.
