GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Take a drive south of Gateway, and you'll see some of the most remarkable landscape ever. The Dolores River runs along Colorado Hwy. 141, and is similar to what it would be like if a road went through the Grand Canyon.
There's an old Jeep trail off of John Brown Canyon Road, just outside of Gateway, where you can hike along until you get to Conception Point - or stop at an overlook before the point if you prefer not to scramble up the summit. The overlook provides sweeping views of much of the Northern Dolores River Basin.
With the San Juan Mountains to the south, and La Salle Mountains to the west in Utah, the views are magnificent all along the way - even while walking through an old burn area, where old juniper trees make pleasing sculptures against the sky and hillsides.
The area is located in the northernmost portions of the proposed expansions to the Sewemup Mesa Wilderness Study Area.
