GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Pray for snow and prepare your opening-day costume.
Though Powderhorn Mountain Resort's opening day - originally set for Dec. 13 - was delayed, the ski area remains optimistic on its new kick-off date: Saturday, Dec. 15, at 9 a.m.
"We could open as soon as Saturday weather permitting, however this is all dependent on natural snow fall," Powderhorn's spokeswoman Gabrielle Michna said.
Terrain to be available has not yet been announced.
"We have been blowing snow when conditions allow and grooming as much as possible for safety purposes and, of course, to create a great base to last through the season," Michna added.
So, for those Powderhorn diehards who can't miss a first day of turns, costume preparation is a must. Everyone on two planks or one is encouraged to dress as their favorite superhero. Just be sure you can see through your Spiderman mask before taking your first turns of the year.
"Costumes are highly encouraged and prizes will be awarded," Michna added.
A portion of opening day's costume-party proceeds will be donated to both Colorado Discover Ability, a local adaptive sports nonprofit, as well as Mesa County Partners, a Grand Valley organizations providing mentors to at-risk children.
The celebration will also include live music on the Sunset Deck, along with vendors and art.
"Help us put the POW in POWDERHORN!" Michna said.
