Miles for the Marrs, a 5K run/walk benefit for the Marr family from Glenwood Springs, will be held this Saturday at 10 a.m. at Glenwood Springs High School. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the cost is $10 or whatever donation you see fit. No matter the weather, come out and support the Marr family.

The fourth annual Jingle Bell Run and shoe drive hits Carbondale this Sunday at 11 a.m.

The timed 5K race, which starts at Independence Run and Hike, will feature awards for the top finishers, a raffle for all participants and food. The cost is $10, with proceeds benefiting local high school cross country teams and Perpetual Prosperity Pumps Foundation.

Every runner who brings in a pair of used shoes to donate will receive a free Dos Gringos burrito and hot chocolate/tea/coffee. All shoes will be shipped to Perpetual Prosperity Pumps Foundation.

Also, runners are encouraged to show up sporting their ugliest sweater. The runner with the ugliest sweater (voted on by volunteers and staff) wins a new prAna sweater.

The course takes runners from Independence Run and Hike onto the Rio Grande Trail up to Eighth Street. From there, it's onto Merrill Avenue, through town to Sopris Avenue and then up White Hill and back to the store.

Telemark Skier Magazine will stage the first annual Suds n' Ski Tour, a unique combination of beer, live music and the only telemark ski movie of the year.

Carbondale will serve as one of the tour's six stops. Suds n' Ski will will be at The Black Nugget (403 Main St.) tonight beginning with a showing of the telemark ski movie "Let's Go!" at 9 p.m.

A performance by outlaw country band Lorin Walker Madsen and The Hustlers will follow at 10 p.m. At 11:30 p.m., punk rock band Riva Rebels will take the stage.

"Let's Go!" introduces viewers to the Telemark Skier Crew, a high-octane group of freeheel skiers in search of the perfect turn.

Wednesday, Jan. 2, is the last chance to pre-register for the Sunlight Winter Sports Club's Buddy Werner program.

From 4-6 p.m. at the U.S. Bank community room (1901 Grand Ave., Glenwood Springs), you can register your racer for the youth ski team and pick up his/her racing bib. This is a chance to avoid the lines and craziness of opening morning on Saturday, Jan. 5.

This season, a $25 bib deposit is required (in the form of a check). The check will not be deposited and will be returned at the end of the season when bibs are returned.

Coaches are meeting on Sunday, Dec. 16, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and will be skiing in preparation for the season.

Buddy Werner primer: This program is for youngsters 6 to 12 years old who are recreational skiers and want a basic exposure to alpine ski racing competition. Racers gather at Sunlight Mountain from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each Saturday beginning on the first non-holiday weekend in January. Adult volunteer coaches run the show.

The New Castle Recreation Department is offering winter sports programs for adults beginning in mid-January.

For volleyball enthusiasts, NCR is again offering the popular Mixed Quads League on Tuesday evenings for both recreational and competitive teams. Teams are required to have a minimum of one female on the court at all times and this league is self-officiated. League play begins on Jan. 15 and the fee is $120 per team.

The Winter Blast Quads Tournament will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9. Teams can be all-male, all-female or co-ed, and the registration fee is $80 per team if signed up by Feb. 4 or $100 after that date.

NCR is also offering Hoops Mania and a 4-on-4 adult basketball league this winter for ages 16 and up.

Hoops Mania is an opportunity to get your team organized for the league and will be held on Thursday, Jan. 17, from 6:45-9 p.m. at Riverside Middle School. Hoops Mania is a mini-tournament that will include different game formats. The fee is $10 per player, with registration due no later than Jan. 14.

The 4-on-4 league begins Jan. 24 and will be conducted on Thursday evenings between 7-9 p.m. The fee is $100 per team in this self-officiated program.
