Their playoff T-shirts said it best: "Joga Bonito."
That's Portuguese for "play beautiful." And that's what Coal Ridge High School's boys soccer team did in 2012, making a run all the way to the Class 3A state semifinals against eventual state champion Colorado Academy.
The Titans, who earned the No. 3 seed in the playoffs, put together their best season in school history, going 17-2. They were led on offense by junior Edgar Enriquez's 32 goals and 18 assists. Senior leader Jorge Hernandez added 13 goals and 16 assists for Coal Ridge.
And the Titans did it all with a new head coach. After Brian Blair's abrupt resignation late in the summer, assistant coach Mike Mikalakis took over. Mikalakis has a football and wrestling background - he's also the school's wrestling coach - but studied up on soccer and thrived at the helm of the team.
