Top 10 sports stories, No. 1: Bears nearly win it all

Rifle High School's football team had a Class 3A state title in its sights, but the Silver Creek Raptors had other ideas.

Silver Creek, a year removed from a 14-7 loss to Windsor in the 2011 title game, got its golden ball trophy with a 32-15 win over the Bears in Aurora on Dec. 1.

Still, Rifle had a season that will go down in school history. The Bears were 13-1, destroying opponent after opponent en route to their berth in the championship tilt.

Senior running back Ryan Moeller rushed for 3,002 yards and 43 touchdowns. Kellin Leigh added 1,174 yards and 12 scores for a team rushing attack that put up 5,012 yards.

And then there was Rifle's swarming, stingy defense, which allowed just 107 points all season (7.6 per game).

The Bears made their first appearance in a title game since 2005. They last won it all in 2004.
