Garfield County Sheriff & Rifle Police Departments Cop Shop Report - Jan. 3, 2013

Harassment: On Dec. 10 at 8:11 a.m., police received a report of inappropriate contact by a 15-year old juvenile boy upon a juvenile girl at Rifle High School, 1350 Prefontaine Ave. The 15-year-old boy was issued a summons and released to his guardian. Traffic violation: Officers received a traffic complaint near East 16th Street and Birch Avenue on Dec. 10 at 4:29 p.m. After investigation, Matthew Kai Steinwinder, 18, of Rifle, was cited for failing to stop for a school bus. Theft: Police are investigating a theft of electronics from Walmart, 1000 Airport Road, reported on Dec. 11 at 8:52 p.m.Reckless driving: Police are investigating a roll over accident in the 300 block of East Seventh Street on Dec. 12 at 2:07 a.m. Officers are looking for the driver of the vehicle at the time of the accident, who fled the scene. Theft: Police took a report of the theft of a bicycle in the 1800 block of Railroad Avenue on Dec. 12 at 11:16 a.m.Vehicle theft: On Dec. 12 at 1 p.m., police learned of a vehicle stolen from the 800 block of East Avenue. The vehicle was later recovered in New Castle, and Joshua Alvin Ramsey, 27, of Rifle, was arrested on suspicion of motor vehicle theft. Theft: Police are investigating a report of a trailer reported stolen from the 1900 block of Howard Avenue on Dec. 12 at 2:13 p.m.Pot: Police responded to Rifle Middle School, 753 Railroad Ave., on Dec. 13 at 11:51 a.m. for a suspected drug violation. A 13-year-old girl, 11-year-old boy and 12-year-old boy, all of Rifle, were cited for possession of suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Criminal mischief: Police are investigating a report of someone seen vandalizing a building in the 200 block of East Fourth Street on Dec. 14 at 10:10 a.m.Theft: Police are investigating a report of theft of a mail package in the 700 block of Elder Court on Dec. 14 at 12:37 a.m.Resisting arrest: Police responded to the 1500 block of Anvil View Avenue on Dec. 15 at 12:46 a.m. for a report of a suspicious person passed out in a residential driveway. During the investigation, Caleb Joshua Hostettler, 34, of Rifle, became combative and was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and second degree assault of a peace officer. Hostettler was taken to jail.Theft: Police responded to a report of theft from Jon's Liquors, 401 W. Second St., on Dec. 15 at 10:17 a.m. After investigation, Christopher Curtis Billman, 26, of Rifle, was issued a summons for theft. Harassment: On Dec. 15 at 9:21 p.m., police took a report of phone harassment on Meadow Circle. After investigation, no charges were filed.Criminal mischief: Officers received a report of criminal mischief in the 2400 block of Acacia Avenue on Dec. 16 at 1:48 p.m. An unknown substance was applied to a vehicle. Gunshots: On Dec. 16 at 8:48 p.m., police were called to the area of Fifth Street and Birch Avenue on a report of gunshots. Officers found Jonathan Edward Gates, 34, of Rifle, who was allegedly intoxicated and was suspected of shooting firearms. Gates was arrested and taken to jail. Theft: On Dec. 17 at 8:36 a.m., a citizen reported someone stole approximately $1,200 worth of items from a residence in the 1300 block of Dogwood Drive. The case is under investigation. Theft: Police received a report of employee theft from a business in the 800 block of Airport Road on Dec. 17 at 10:20 a.m. The case is under investigation. Theft: Police responded to the 400 block of West 27th Street on Dec. 17 at 11:36 a.m. for a report of fraud. A citizen was the victim of Internet check fraud involving a large amount of money.Domestic violence: Police responded to the 700 block of East Avenue on Dec. 17 at 4:28 p.m. for a domestic violence incident. Monica Lee Vetter, 30, of Rifle, was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and was taken to jail.Harassment: Police responded to the 1300 block of Arabian Avenue on Dec. 17 at 6:05 p.m. for a disturbance. A 16-year-old girl from Rifle was taken into custody and later released with a summons for harassment. Damaging property: Police were called to a report of trespass in the 400 block of East Sixth Street on Dec. 17 at 8:01 p.m. James Yaeger, 22, of Rifle, was issued a summons for damaging property. Theft: On Dec. 18 at 1:14 p.m., officers took a report of a debit card that had been stolen from a vehicle in the 700 block of East Seventh Street. After investigation, a warrant was issued for a suspect for domestic violence, harassment, theft, motor vehicle theft and first degree criminal trespass.Assault: On Dec. 19 at 1:34 a.m., police learned an alleged assault in the 2400 block of Howard Avenue, followed by a report from a neighbor that someone was trying to break in to their house. Jacob Counts, 21, of Rifle, was arrested on suspicion of assault and first degree criminal trespass. Warrant arrest: Police were investigating a separate matter in the 2400 block of West Avenue on Dec. 19 at 2:20 a.m. when they contacted Isaias Garcia Garcia, 25, of Rifle, who was found to have an active warrant. Garcia was arrested and later posted bond and was released.Theft: On Dec. 19 at 7:22 a.m., officers took a report of items stolen from a vehicle parked in the 700 block of East Seventh Street.Warrant arrests: Police stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 1900 block of Railroad Avenue on Dec. 20 at 5:42 a.m. The driver, Cleveland Henry Benally, 29, of Teec Nos Pos Bluff, Ariz., was arrested on a Rio Blanco County warrant, and was issued a summons for speeding and compulsory insurance. A passenger, Sonto Cruz Benally, 26, of Teec Nos Pos Bluff, Ariz., was also found to have an active warrant from Moffat County and was arrested. Both were taken to jail.Theft: On Dec. 21 at 11:46 a.m., deputies took a report of a theft from a residence on County Road 227 outside Rifle sometime in the past two weeks. There is no suspect information at this time.Minor in possession: Deputies responded to a citizen assist call in the 100 block of Angelica Circle in Battlement Mesa on Dec. 21 at 9:53 p.m. After investigation, a 17-year-old juvenile was issued a summons for minor in possession of alcohol.Vandalism: Deputies learned of criminal mischief to a vehicle in the 500 block of Tamarisk Trail in Battlement Mesa on Dec. 22 at 10:46 p.m. that caused approximately $400 in damage. Deputies found another vehicle that had also been damaged. No suspects at this time.Warrant arrest: Deputies helped the FBI and New Castle Police Department with the arrest of a fugitive at County Road 245/Hidden Valley Road outside New Castle on Dec. 22 at 12:12 a.m. James David Tiner, 59, of Palisade, was arrested for a warrant out of Mesa County for sexual assault on a child and a federal warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.Escape: Police contacted a man known to have multiple warrants on Dec. 23 at 12:02 a.m. in the 400 block of West Second Street. However, after he was arrested and placed in a patrol vehicle, the man escaped. A warrant has been issued.Domestic violence: Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 100 block of Bent Creek Circle in Battlement Mesa on Dec. 23 at 1:36 a.m. After investigation, Christian Shaunta Bellard, 27, of Parachute, and Clinton Lee Pontius, 32, of Parachute, were arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and harassment and were taken to jail.Domestic violence: Police responded to the 2400 block of Howard Avenue on Dec. 23 at 3:02 a.m. for a report of a disturbance. Joe E. Archuleta, 37, of Rifle, was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, violation of a restraining order, burglary and assault, and was taken to jail. Warrant arrest: Officers arrested Berenice Astorga, 19, of Rifle, in the 800 block of East Avenue on Dec. 24 at 1:20 p.m. on an outstanding warrant. Astorga was released after posting bond.Burglary: Deputies took a burglary report on River Frontage Road outside Silt on Dec. 24 at 2:29 p.m.Abandoned vehicle: Deputies responded to a report of an abandoned vehicle on County Road 215 outside Parachute on Dec. 26 at 9:03 a.m. The vehicle was towed, and Joshua Rhyan Umberger, 33, of Grand Junction, was issued a summons for abandonment of vehicles and illegal parking.Minors in possession: A deputy contacted a vehicle on County Road 244 outside Rifle on Dec. 26 at 8:40 p.m. and issued summons to three Parachute juveniles, ages 16 and 17, for minor in possession of alcohol, possession of an open alcoholic container in motor vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia.Dog bite: Animal control is investigating a dog bite on U.S. Highway 6 outside Silt on Dec. 27 at 2:49 p.m. The dog's owner has been contacted.Pot possession: A deputy contacted a vehicle on Railroad Avenue in Rifle on Dec. 27 at 7:46 p.m. Two people, Diego Oswaldo Sotelo, 19, of Rifle, and a 16-year old youth from Rifle, were allegedly found to be in possession of marijuana. Both were issued a summons.DUI, firearms possession: Deputies responded to a suspicious incident on Stone Quarry Road in Battlement Mesa on Dec. 27 at 8:28 p.m. Deputies learned Dwight Aaron Sullivan Cerise, 22, of Rifle, was allegedly in violation of a temporary protection order by being in possession of a firearm. Deputies also found Cerise was allegedly intoxicated, operated a vehicle and crashed the vehicle. Cerise was arrested and taken to jail.DUI: Deputies stopped a vehicle at West Battlement Parkway and Stone Quarry Road in Battlement Mesa for a traffic violation on Dec. 29 at 8:25 p.m. The driver, Justin August Daugherty, 32, of Parachute, was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and taken to jail.Domestic violence: Deputies responded to a disturbance in the 800 block of West Battlement Parkway in Battlement Mesa on Dec. 30 at 5:09 p.m. Dustin Nalls, 27, of Parachute, was arrested on suspicion of first degree assault, child abuse and domestic violence. He was taken to jail.
