Editor's note: The Garfield County Sheriff's Department reports the following incidents and arrests. Summonses or arrests merely indicate an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless found guilty in court.
Blocking traffic: On Dec. 26, deputies were called to the Battlement Mesa/Parachute area to deal with two vehicles blocking roadways, one at 9:03 a.m. on County Road 215 and another at 1:24 p.m. at an undisclosed location in Battlement Mesa. Joshua R. Umberger, 33, of Grand Junction, owner of the vehicle on County Road 215, was located and cited for abandoning a vehicle.
Sex offenses: Deputies were advised of two alleged sex offenses on Dec. 26, one at 2:12 p.m. in Glenwood Springs and another at 2:39 in New Castle. Both cases are under investigation.
Underage drinking: At 8:40 p.m. on Dec. 26, deputies contacted the occupants of a vehicle on County Road 244 (Fravert Reservoir Road), and issued summons to three juveniles, ages 16 and 17, on charges of underage possession, open containers of alcohol in a vehicle, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Popped for pot: At 7:46 p.m. on Dec. 27, deputies contacted two occupants in a vehicle near Rifle for an undisclosed purpose. The deputies issued tickets to both of the occupants on marijuana related charges. Diego O. Sotelo, 19, of Rifle, was charged with possession of two ounces or less of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. The other occupant, a 17-year old, also was charged with possession of two ounces or less of marijuana.
Driving under the influence: At 10:28 p.m. on Dec. 27, deputies were dispatched to Stone Quarry Road in Battlement Mesa. Upon investigation, deputies arrested Dwight Aaron Cerise, 22, of Rifle, on charges of violation of a restraining order, prohibited possession of a firearm, careless driving and suspicion of driving under the influence. He was booked at the Garfield County Jail.
Minor in possession: At 12:54 a.m. on Dec. 28, at the corner of 16th and Grand in Glenwood Springs, deputies stopped a vehicle driven by Kyle Shelby Winkler, 18, of Glenwood Springs for failure to use turn signals. Winkler was ticketed for underage possession of alcohol.
Dog bites owner: At 3:19 p.m. on Dec. 29, deputies were called to a home on Bent Creek Circle near Parachute, where a dog reportedly had bitten its owner. The dog was placed in quarantine, and no charges are being pursued.
Unattended death at Harvey Gap: At 3:19 p.m. on Dec. 29, Garfield County deputies were called to an unattended death in the Harvey Gap area north of Silt. The Garfield County Coroner's office reported that Kurt Walters, 50, of Grand Junction, died at the scene of a heart attack.
Drunk driving: At 8:25 p.m. on Dec. 29, deputies stopped a vehicle in Battlement Mesa for allegedly failing to use turn signals. Justin A. Daugherty, 32, of Parachute, was arrested and jailed for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Harassment: At 8:34 p.m. on Dec. 29, deputies contacted Sandra Cortes-Ramierez, 35, of Carbondale on Highway 133 in Carbondale and, after an investigation, arrested her on suspicion of harassment and domestic violence.
Assault, child abuse: At 5:09 p.m. on Dec. 30, deputies were called to a disturbance in Battlement Mesa. Dustin Nalls, 27, of Parachute, was arrested and jailed on charges of first degree assault, child abuse and domestic violence.
Fireworks: At 10:06 p.m. on Dec. 31, a deputy was dispatched to the No Name area to investigate a report of shots fired. The deputy determined the shots were fireworks, and no arrests were reported.
Underage drinking: At 10:07 p.m. on Dec. 31, deputies were dispatched to check out a noise complaint on Chapparal Circle near Glenwood Springs. Five people - Randy A. Burbidge, 18, Jake Bair, 19, Casey E. Hynes, 19, and Cody Derby, 19, all of Glenwood Springs; and Robert Reynolds, 19, of Castle Rock - were ticketed for underage drinking.
