Harry L. Derr, Jr.

"Be at rest once more, o my soul, for the Lord has been good to you." - Psalm 116:7

Harry-L. Derr, Jr., passed away peacefully in his sleep on Dec. 30, 2012. He will be lovingly and greatly missed by his family and friends.

Born in Lewistown, Penn., to Harry and Edith Derr, he was the middle brother of three, splitting his time between their butcher shop in town and their farm in the country. His love for fishing and hunting began in his early years and followed with him his entire life.

In 1946, Harry enlisted in the Army. As a veteran of WWII and the Korean War, his career included many highlights - including leading General MacArthur's Honor Guard. He maintained the Army regime throughout his life with pride and respect.

Having three boys in branches of the service, his mom, Edith Derr, along with Jimmy Stewart's mom, co-founded then famous Mothers of World War II on the East Coast as a support to the troops and their families. Edith was installed as President of the Mothers of WWII in January of 1949. His dad, Harry Derr Sr., was renown for playing the bugle, especially for Military functions.

On a sunny day in March in a Church in Nebraska in the year 1944, he married Charlotte Wilson, his love and friend. They enjoyed 58 years of marriage with the birth of one daughter, before Charlotte preceded him to resurrection life in 2001. They lived in Pennsylvania, Kansas, Texas, Puerto Rico and Oklahoma before moving to Colorado in 1980.

Harry was a member of the Masonic Lodge with high honors, and a wonderful and loving mentor to his only grandson for 24 years. Surviving family members are his daughter Debbie Weis and his grandson Nic Weis.

He attended the First Presbyterian Church until he was 92. His memorial services will be held there later in the winter. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 162, Glenwood Springs, CO, 81602. A notification of the service time will follow.
