Library meeting rooms available for events

Garfield County Libraries have opened up meeting rooms to be used for a wider range of events. Starting this year, our meeting rooms can be reserved for an hourly fee for non-commercial and commercial purposes, such as classes or private lessons, employee training, fundraising events and more.

You can even host events at the libraries that are not open to the public, or that require an entrance fee. If you have an event and need a comfortable, central meeting place, reserve one of our meeting rooms today.

Why the change? Garfield County Libraries is in the business of providing needed resources and services in its communities. Over the past few years, we have received hundreds of requests from community members and businesses to use our meeting rooms, but were unable to fulfill these requests as our meeting rooms had only been available for free public events.

The libraries will continue to exempt governmental entities, public, private and nonprofit groups from room fees as long as the events are free and open to the public.

Hourly fees will apply to private events and those that charge an entrance fee. At this time, the meeting rooms are not available for private social events, such as birthday parties, showers, etc.

Currently, Garfield County Libraries have eight meeting rooms of varying sizes at the six library branches. Kitchens are available at some sites, and use does require a fee.

By the end of 2013, after opening up new libraries in Carbondale and Glenwood Springs, we will have nine spacious, state-of-the-art meeting rooms equipped with the latest technology. We invite you to check us out for your next event.

For more information, or to request a meeting room, visit your local Garfield County Library.

Need a study break? Teens are invited to join us at the New Castle Branch Library for an afternoon of Wii games at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12.

Children are invited to come to the New Castle, Silt and Rifle branch libraries on Friday afternoons for engaging art classes taught by Re-2 teachers.

Classes for kindergartners through second-graders will be held at each library from noon to 2 p.m., and classes for third- and fourth-graders will be held at each library from 2:30-4:30 p.m.

Each class will be limited to 25 students, on a first-come, first-served basis. Parents are encouraged to call the library or go online at www.gcpld.org to pre-register for this program.

Go to www.gcpld.org/calendar for a complete description of each Friday's activities.

This program is funded in part with a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services which administers the Library Services and Technology Act.

Artist Shannon Muse of Paradise Art Glass is creating a permanent public art installation, "Pillars of Light/Pilares de Luz," for the new Carbondale Branch Library.

The multi-part sculptural piece will form the seven entryway columns on the front porch of the new library. Each pillar will include a number of tiles featuring thoughts on libraries, learning, enlightenment and community.

Garfield County Libraries and Muse invite community members to submit content to be embedded in the columns, such as quotes, words, numbers or symbols. Participants are asked to include information about their submission, such as what it means to them.

There is no fee for submitting an idea, and the artist will select up to 144 different entries for inclusion.

Entry forms are available at the Carbondale Branch Library or online at www.gcpld.org/construction. Contact Shannon Muse at paradiseartglass@sopris.net for more information about participating in the creation of the piece or submitting an idea.

The Carbondale Branch Library project is currently under construction and is slated for completion in the summer of 2013. Contact the library district's executive director, Amelia Shelley, if you have questions about this project or available donor opportunities.
