Locally owned Traz Snow & Skate is closing, liquidating inventory

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Grand Junction's only surf-style, mom n' pop snowboard and skate retailer - Traz Snow & Skate - will shut its doors soon, after 19 years in business."Traz is closing when the inventory is gone," owner Tom LeValley said. "We're trying to sell everything. Items are drastically reduced. It's a lot of stuff."Discounts currently range from 30-70 percent off regular store prices, LeValley said, and items on sale include snowboards, boots, bindings, snowboard clothing (including jackets, pants, gloves, helmets and goggles), skateboards and skate accessories, shoes, shorts, T-shirts, wallets, belts, etc."Closing the store is extremely sad and difficult to do, but with the current state of our own industry and economy, it is not feasible to continue," LeValley said in a Facebook post. "We cannot pay rent based on a boom-time economy when it doesn't exist anymore. Many of the products we carry were exclusive to our specialty-type shop in the beginning, but the Internet and our own suppliers have been selling out to big-box stores, so it has caused our customer base to forget about us." Known for its sunglasses, snowboard gear, skateboard items (including locally manufactured Honey Skateboards) and clothing, LeValley said competition with web retailers and big-box shops made staying in business unrealistic."Mom and pop stores have been forgotten," he added.LeValley additionally noted a downward trend in folks taking up snowboarding as beginners to the sport."We carry a large selection of beginner snowboards and we have had very few buyers buying and getting into the sport the last two years," he said on Facebook.Traz Snow & Skate can be found near Bed, Bath and Beyond at 2466 U.S. 6.
