Carbondale cop to be named interim police chief in Basalt

The Basalt town manager is advising the Town Council to hire Carbondale Police Sgt. Greg Knott as the interim police chief. The council is expected to act on the request at its meeting Tuesday in a move that will likely just be a formality.

Town Manager Mike Scanlon was given the council's blessing to work out an agreement with an interim police chief, so his recommendation isn't likely to be rejected.

Knott has been with the Carbondale Police Department for 19 years. He has expressed an interest in applying for the full-time position, according to Scanlon.

"Greg provides us with both the day-to-day experience that we need to assist in the continuing operations of our department and he's an excellent resource in reviewing department policy and procedures," Scanlon said in a news release.

The agreement with Knott allows him to work up to 24 hours per week. He will be paid $1,298 per week, according to Scanlon.

Knott was selected after Scanlon interviewed five candidates for the post.

The police-chief position is open after the resignation in November of Roderick O'Connor for reasons town officials and O'Connor won't discuss. The town placed O'Connor on paid administrative leave while it conducted an investigation into his management practices. However, he was reinstated immediately prior to his resignation and the town said no disciplinary action was taken as a result of the investigation.

Scanlon appointed a five-member Community Advisory Panel to help select a new police chief. Scanlon will also seek advice from a panel of law enforcement and emergency responders. The Town Council will interview candidates as well.

Scanlon hopes to select a police chief by late April.
