LEADVILLE, Colorado - Cody Pfau is beginning to find the top of the podium to be a familiar place in her senior wrestling season at Grand Valley High School.
The senior 106-pounder was named the outstanding wrestler at the Jim McCall Invitational tournament Saturday night, winning all five of her matches in convincing fashion in helping the Cardinals finish third as a team.
"Overall, I was fairly pleased with the way we performed," Grand Valley coach Rick Gutierrez said. "We were wrestling at 10,200 feet, that that's an obstacle in itself to overcome."
George Stagg of Grand Valley also won his weight class, earning a 10-4 decision over Noah Eurioste of Dolores Huerta in the tournament's weight-class title match. Miguel Valles earned second place at 126 pounds, Tucker Schultz finished 4-1 in the tournament on his way to a second-place finish at 138 pounds, and Bryan Hegwood (170) and Michael Salazar (160) each finished third. Will Hinkle (152) and Jedd Stagg (145) took fourth place in their weight classes, with Stagg doing so in his first varsity competition.
The banner day, however, went to Pfau. She finished 5-0 in the tournament to improve to 16-2 on the season, and she pinned her first four opponents in 13, 28, 34 and 48 seconds. In the final, she won by a final score of 14-1.
Grand Valley wrestles again on Thursday in a home dual with Meeker, then heads up I-70 Saturday to wrestle in the Rifle Duals.
