McKibbin wins 'mad money' for parking on Seventh

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado - Mike McKibbin, a weekly commuter to Glenwood Springs from Rifle, won $250 in Downtown Parking Perks tokens last week.

Long before the Parking Perks promotion began, McKibbin grew accustomed to parking in the Seventh Street lot and walking into the downtown for work and errands. He likes the exercise, and has always been mindful of keeping core parking available for visitors and shoppers.

McKibbin is the editor of The Citizen Telegram, Rifle's weekly newspaper, and he works from the Post Independent offices in Glenwood Springs each Wednesday to finish production on the publication.

McKibbin registered his vehicle license plate in the Parking Perks contest and his car was identified in the alternative recommended Seventh Street lot in January.

Parking Perks coordinators asked McKibbin what he planned to do with his winnings, which are redeemable tokens accepted like cash at 20 downtown businesses.

"I'll treat some friends to some shopping," he said. "And buy myself some really warm gloves at Summit Canyon."

Commuters, cyclists, employees and visitors to downtown Glenwood Springs can participate and win in Downtown Parking Perks. The promotion, sponsored by the city of Glenwood Springs, will continue through the downtown construction period that will end later this year.
