CARBONDALE, Colorado - The town's trustees tonight will be trying to figure out how to maximize their investment in the community's energy efficiency goals for 2013.
At issue is $100,000 in energy funding included in the 2013 budget for capital construction, over and above the town's annual membership fees in the Clean Energy Economy for the Region (CLEER) and Community Office of Resource Efficiency (CORE), according to a memo from Town Manager Jay Harrington to the trustees.
Both organizations have been working with the town to increase energy efficiency for public and private buildings as a way to save money and to help reduce harmful emissions from power plants and other sources of pollution.
Each organization gets $25,000 in annual membership fees from the town.
The $100,000 in energy funding, Harrington wrote in his memo, is not yet allocated to any particular use.
Some of that, he wrote, could be used as matching funds for money earmarked by Garfield County to go to CLEER or CORE.
Harrington wrote that the county announced in December that it will match any new funding for CLEER or CORE from Carbondale, as well as the five other towns in Garfield County, if that new funding is over and above what the town already had provided in its 2013 budget.
Harrington said the $100,000 was viewed by the trustees as separate from the membership fees. So the town believes that if any of the $100,000 is directed toward the two energy-efficiency organizations, it will be eligible for the county's matching fund.
The trustees meeting begins at 6 p.m. at Town Hall, 511 Colorado Ave. in Carbondale.
